For the 2026 PADC Student Skulls competition, the brief challenged participants to identify and address a relational problem through design. From a selection of proposed issues, I chose to focus on communication confidence, exploring how people navigate difficult conversations and the barriers that can prevent them from feeling comfortable opening up to those closest to them. I was particularly interested in the challenges young adults face when trying to communicate their experiences and needs following emotionally significant counselling sessions, and how design could help bridge the gap between professional support and personal relationships.

My final concept, Attune, is a digital communication ecosystem designed to help young adults and their loved ones prepare for and navigate these conversations. Connecting young adults, their support circles and counsellors through a shared, multi-user platform, Attune provides guided reflection, personalised sharing and supportive spaces that encourage more meaningful communication. By helping young adults identify what they feel comfortable sharing, while giving loved ones the tools to better understand and support them, Attune aims to build communication confidence and strengthen relationships beyond the counselling room.
